The image describes a large portion of surfing, which is waiting for the wave.
The photo expresses the feeling surfers get while anticipating a wave. The image is black and white creating a contrast between the water and air. The negative along with the large depth of field space helps to emphasize the size of the ocean which also helps to give the view it a very "deep unknown" feel. The main subject matter in the image is both the water and surfers. The camera actually sits in the water, but at a far distance from the image. All of these combine help show a calm ocean leading to the surfers who are out of focus. The image gives off a very meditative feeling quite similar to that of which a surfer feels while waiting for a wave, or riding a wave. They become "one" with the ocean.
